Rape and the gunOn February 15th, while debating a bill on the Colorado house floor that would ban all firearms from Colorado university campuses,  lawmaker Joe Salazar (Democrat) suggested female college students should not have guns because they may shoot a non-rapist due to an irrational fear of being raped. In his remarks in favor of the campus gun ban, Salazar noted that women on college campuses have other methods of protection against assault, including call boxes and whistles. No, I am not making this up!

In the video, Salazar says,

It’s why we have call boxes; it’s why we have safe zones; it’s why we have the whistles — because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop … pop a round at somebody,” Salazar said.

NewImageAgain, this is an example of when happens with logic stops and dogma takes over. What Salazar should have known was recently reported data show a sharp downward trend in “forcible and non-forcible sex offenses” at Colorado State University beginning in 2003 — the same year the university agreed to allow the concealed carry of properly permitted handguns on its campuses. Translated – conceal and carry rates up, sex offenses down.

While we should all call his office to let him know the facts and point out just how insensitive he is, woman should especially do so. Joe Salazar think you’re crazy and can’t be trusted with a gun. He would rather see you raped and possibly dead, than allow you to carry a gun and protect yourself from sex offenders. Unbelievable!

Here is Joe Salazar (Democrat) uninformed and insensitive speech:

FOLLOW-UP NOTE [ADDED FROM FACEBOOK DISCUSSION]: Any woman who has a restraining order against another person, who has a history of violent behavior, should demand a conceal and carry permit from the court on the spot, no matter what state they live in. the police, as we know, are not here to protect us (see the Supreme Court Ruling on the blog). As such, it is principally up to the woman to protect herself.
